Online conspiracy and collective blame reach a small community with deep local roots; neighbours also organize against hostility.

A distant war enters the classroom

After the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand received increased complaints about antisemitism in schools. It asked parents about children's experiences and pressed educational institutions to respond.

A child in New Zealand does not decide the actions of a government overseas. Making that child answer for Israel turns political anger into collective blame. The Centre's survey gives participating families a voice; it cannot establish how common these experiences were among every pupil.

The accusation travels between screens

In material collected during 2024, the Online Hate Prevention Institute found both older Jewish-control conspiracies and Israel-related collective blame. The mixture differed across platforms. This was a selected sample of online hostility, rather than a portrait of every New Zealander.

NZSIS's 2026 assessment also describes people exploring conflicting extremist ideologies online. Opposing labels do not prevent the same person from consuming different hateful narratives. That observation does not establish an organized alliance or identify the motives behind every incident.

Choosing to remain neighbours

The Jewish Council reported 143 antisemitic incidents in 2025, its highest calendar-year total, as summarized by One Community. The figure records community reports; it does not mean every incident was an assault.

There were also public commitments to a different future. On 22 July 2025, Jewish and Muslim signatories presented the Harmony Accord at Government House. They pledged action against discrimination and isolation. The agreement records a choice to work together, while leaving its practical results to be judged over time.
