The idea
When the state adopts antisemitic assumptions, prejudice becomes administrative reality. People are marked, restricted, dispossessed, expelled, or harmed through systems that claim legitimacy.
The recurring move
The state names Jews as a public problem, then creates policies that appear orderly because they are official.
Algeria · 7 October 1940
Vichy repealed the Crémieux decree, stripping the Jews covered by it of French citizenship. Further laws excluded Jews from professions and education. A person could lose the legal basis of participation through a state decision. The regime treated ancestry as more important than decades of citizenship.
