Responsibility · The victim story leaves people out
Austria’s postwar account had to confront the participation hidden behind a story of German takeover.
Austria as Hitler’s victim
After the war, Austria emphasized its annexation by Nazi Germany. That history was real, but a story focused only on victimhood could obscure Austrian enthusiasm, collaboration and participation in persecution. Jewish victims were poorly served by an account that treated the country as innocent as a whole.
Who had gained from persecution?
Jewish survivors confronted lost families and stolen property. Following the fate of a home or business exposes the people and institutions that benefited from exclusion. Responsibility includes these practical consequences, alongside the ideology that made the seizure acceptable.
The older roots matter
The Nazis did not invent every anti-Jewish accusation used in Austria. Religious prejudice and Lueger’s mass politics had given hostility familiar language. Nazi rule transformed those traditions into radical racial persecution. Explaining the earlier inheritance helps explain reception without making the Holocaust an inevitable outcome.
