The idea
The blood libel turned Jewish neighbors into imagined secret predators. It took ordinary vulnerability around children, faith, and death and converted it into a story of hidden Jewish violence.
The recurring move
A local crisis becomes a symbolic accusation. Evidence matters less than the emotional power of the myth, which presents Jews as both near enough to blame and alien enough to fear.
Czechia · Leopold Hilsner is accused
In 1899, Leopold Hilsner was prosecuted after a young woman’s murder. Public agitation promoted the false idea of Jewish ritual killing. A criminal allegation against one man became a story about Jews collectively. The supposed religious explanation substituted prejudice for a careful examination of the case.
