The idea
Christian traditions often defined themselves in relation to Judaism. When that relationship became hostile, Jews could be portrayed as spiritually blind, cursed, or collectively guilty.
The recurring move
The pattern joined theology to social power. Sermons, images, passion plays, and local rumors made Jewish neighbors stand for cosmic wrongdoing.
France · A restricted livelihood becomes a stereotype
Medieval restrictions narrowed Jewish access to occupations, while rulers taxed communities and relied on some Jewish lenders. That arrangement encouraged an association between Jews and money which later prejudice treated as natural. It was not: laws and rulers had shaped the opportunities, and Jewish households did not all do the same work.
