Islamist duty and radical-left anti-imperialism joined in support for October 7’s resistance narrative, while official Jewish protection continued.
Different movements join the same march
In October 2023, the Islamist movement Al Adl wal Ihsane called people to a rally and endorsed Al-Aqsa Flood, the name used for Hamas’s October 7 operation. The left-wing Annahj newspaper described the same wider mobilization.
The shared action brought different political traditions together around Palestine. It also made the response to October 7 visible inside Morocco. What the movement sources establish is that cooperation and support; they do not establish that every participant wanted to harm Moroccan Jews.
A shared cause meets a competing idea of belonging
Moroccan Jews had lived under unequal protection, and Vichy later imposed racial exclusion under the protectorate. Today’s recognition of Jewish heritage offers a different national story, one that includes Jews rather than treating them as foreign. Jewish representatives reported concern after October 7 alongside continued safe synagogue attendance.
At the same time, Al Adl wal Ihsane’s Islamist appeal and Annahj’s radical-left newspaper endorsed the same Rabat mobilization and praised Al-Aqsa Flood. Islamic duty and opposition to American and Israeli power supplied different reasons to support the same cause: an evidenced red–green convergence. That legitimized the operation politically, but the movement documents do not establish a domestic anti-Jewish attack surge. The local mixture includes both that mobilization and institutions capable of resisting its transfer onto Moroccan Jews.
The history does not dictate the ending
Moroccan Jews had lived under unequal protection before colonial rule. Vichy later imposed racial exclusions under the French protectorate. Political authorities had repeatedly shaped how securely a Jewish family could belong.
The aftermath of October 7 brought new worry alongside the continuation of worship. That combination resists an easy ending in either reassurance or catastrophe. The earlier history explains why the community’s concern deserves attention. Its continued public life shows why that history should not be used to assume that every new crisis must unfold in the same way.
